The Village recently adopted the Metropolitan Mayors Caucus's Greenest Region Compact 2. The Compact’s goal is to guide local sustainability efforts throughout the region and measures communities’ progress in a number of areas, including land, municipal operations, mobility, waste and water.

President Fred Gougler stated, “The Village is committed to finding new and innovative ways to improve Northfield through environmental initiatives. The Compact will give us the mechanism to collaborate with other agencies, prioritize goals, measure progress and report back to the community.”
